Something that I’ve been meaning to blog about for a couple of weeks now is that South Lakeland, a region which includes Kendal, has been voted the best place to live in the UK by the Channel 4 TV programme “Relocation, Relocation“. In describing the area, it was said that “If you want an embarrassment of natural riches on your doorstep, then South Lakeland might just be the place”, before going on to refer to it as “a stunning place to be with great people too!”

“Another wonderful stay in this wonderful apartment. Great weather, lovely food, thank you Paul and Becky. See you soon.”

One of the problems with running on relatively high occupancy (last year, which was our first full year, we were close to 90% full) is getting an opportunity to do all those little jobs that need doing. This week we’ve had a rare break in the availability calendar which has allowed us to get a small job done in the master bedroom of our riverside apartment.
There had been a minor leak on the window in that room which, although wasn’t a serious problem, needed some attention, particularly since it had caused the window sill to warp slightly. So the window sill has had to come out, the leak attended to, a new window sill back in, and a little bit of re-plastering and re-painting to make the job good again… plus we’ll need to put the curtains back up and do a re-clean… all in time for this weekend’s guests! Thankfully we are on schedule, it seems, and the job should be completed tomorrow.
There’s an article in next month’s Cumbria Life, the local glossy magazine for Cumbria, about the design and furnishing of holiday accommodation, and I’m pleased to report we got a brief mention in the article. If you’d like to have a read, you can do so by clicking here. Some of you may recall we were featured with a full page in the same publication back in November 2010. That earlier article can be found here (thought the pictures in that one aren’t all that flattering!).
The latest retailer to join Wainwright’s Yard in Kendal is MontRoc, an exciting new outdoor retailer specialising in fast and light clothing and footwear for mountain athletes and outdoor adventurers. Stocking a variety of premium brands and performance products, there’s also an experienced team of expert technicians on hand to help you find just the right product. You’ll find a great choice of brands such as Salomon, Asolo, Marmot, Lowa, Jack Wolfskin, La Sportiva, Montane, Eider and adidas Terrex. The Kendal store is the first to launch and there are some fantastic opening offers to be had, including a chance to win £200 of mountain gear just by signing up for their newsletter, and a free Marmot Grab Bag with every Marmot purchase.
2012 marks the 40th anniversary of Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre. Over the past four decades the arts centre has established its position as one of the most innovative and vibrant venues of its kind in the UK. The celebrations begin on 12th May, 40 years to the day since the building was officially opened as an arts centre, with an exhibition charting the Brewery over the last four decades. They will also launch an appeal to raise funds to improve their customer facilities and equip them to deliver great service in the future.
And over the Summer they are hosting a special Summer Sunday and the Youth Arts department will celebrate its part in the Brewery’s story with a special Platform event on 29th and 30th June.
Finally, in the Autumn the Brewery will present a memorable programme of performances, events and exhibitions to celebrate their birthday, focused around special commissions which will explore the achievements of the Brewery’s past by creating new work for the future.
The latest entry in our guestbook reads:
“Thank you Paul and Becky for making our anniversary to special. It’s so comfortable here and we especially enjoyed having our meals looking out over the river. Apartment superb.”

If you needed a little inspiration as to why the Lake District is such a wonderful area to visit (shame on you if you did!), then look no further than this collection of panoramic images posted on The Guardian’s website last week. The pictures are stunning and courtesy of the photographer Alastair Lee who has compiled a series of fantastic images in his new book, Lake District Mountain Landscape, published by Frances Lincoln and available from Amazon.
