Beijing House Close to Abbot Hall Museum & Art Gallery in the Kirkland/Highgate area of Kendal, Beijing House is a Chinese restaurant specialising in Cantonese and, to a lesser extent, Thai cuisine. Housed in an eye-catching, black and white Tudor-style building, this restaurant offers good value for money, serving everything from duck spring rolls to sweet and sour pork. Takeaways are available.

Bengal Bengal doesn't look much from the outside but it is reasonably popular with locals and visitors alike. The restaurant specialises in Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine and offers an extensive menu that caters for both meat-eaters and vegetarians. Takeaways are only a phone call away or you can eat in if you prefer. On Sundays, the restaurant operates an 'all you can eat' buffet.

Déjà Vu On the corner of Maude Street and Stricklandgate, Déjà Vu is a bistro style restaurant serving a fresh and exciting a la carte menu. The food is typically Mediterranean and, from time to time, the restaurant runs some exceptionally-priced promotions (eg. £9.95 for a 3-course dinner). Déjà Vu is definitely worth a visit and is within very easy walking distance of our accommodation.

Déjà Vu by Day Déjà Vu by Day is a 'sister' café and bar to the popular Déjà Vu restaurant which is only open in the evenings. It is owned by the same husband wife team behind the restaurant and continues the Mediterranean theme. Déjà Vu by Day can be found just a minute up the road from the restaurant at the entrance to the Blackhall Yard Shopping Centre.

Jintana Thai Cuisine Jintana is a new Thai restaurant in Kendal that fills a gap recently made by the closure of Kendal's Chang Thai restaurant. They already have a restaurant in nearby Bowness so have an established reputation in the area. The restaurant offers an extensive menu with a good choice of Thai curries ranging from the relatively mild Gaeng Kheaw Wen to hotter dishes such as Gaeng Ba.

New Moon Restaurant Convenient for the Brewery Arts Centre opposite, the New Moon Restaurant is a great little place to eat, right in the heart of town. It offers the 'Best of British' in a modern environment and using fresh, local produce. Early suppers (from 5.30pm) are available for those attending events at the Brewery Arts Centre, whether it be the theatre or the cinema. An a la carte menu is available as well as a choice of specials. Booking in advance is recommended.

The Punch Bowl at Crosthwaite A little out of Kendal, but well worth the taxi ride, is The Punch Bowl at Crosthwaite which can be found in the Michelin Pub Guide. It is light and airy with polished oak floorboards, leather chairs and a beautiful fireplace. They offer local, seasonal produce serving dishes such as pot roast breast of pheasant, smoked creamed potato, parsley and caper jus. Highly recommended.

Paolo Gianni's Paolo Gianni's is an established Italian restaurant on Stramongate in Kendal. It is open 7 days a week and offers a wide range of pizzas and pasta dishes. In the early evening the restaurant has a 'happy hour' where a portion of the menu is made available at a very competitive prices. Next door the restaurant has opened a wine and tapas bar called Sphere.

Pizza Express Pizza Express is a well-known High Street Italian restaurant in the UK with a branch now open in Kendal. It can be found in Wainwright's Yard, close to the Booths supermarket. The kitchen is led by Dane Swart, a past Pizza Express Pizziaolo of the Year, who has starred on Rayond Blanc's 'The Restaurant'.

Rice Bowl The Rice Bowl is a Chinese restaurant that can be found at the end of Finkle Street in Kendal and offers the usual array of Cantonese and Peking cuisine in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Some Thai-style dishes are also available. Bookings are welcome but not usually essential. Alternatively, takeaways and a delivery service are available.
