Golden Eagle at Haweswater
Sadly, England has only one remaining golden eagle. If you want to see it, head for the RSPB viewpoint at Haweswater. There a solitary male displays in the hope of attracting a mate. The viewpoint is open at all times but only manned at weekends and Bank Holidays between April and August. Entry is free but donations to the RSPB are welcomed to help them continue their work.
Lake District Osprey Project
Back in 2001, a pair of ospreys nested at Bassenthwaite in the Lake District and became the first wild ospreys to breed there for over 150 years. The Lake District Osprey Project looks to ensure the continued success of breeding ospreys in the area and to assist, where possible, with the natural colonization of the Lake District and elsewhere in Cumbria. Visitors wanting to see the ospreys can watch from two viewpoints just a few miles to the north of Keswick.
Leighton Moss Nature Reserve
Leighton Moss Nature Reserve is an RSPB site that offers a fantastic family day out, all year round. It is the largest remaining reedbed in north-west England and you can see many kinds of wildlife, and special birds include breeding bitterns, bearded tits, marsh harriers and avocets. On site there are nature trails, birdwatching hides, a visitor centre and an award-winning tearoom. Activities for children are available and you can also hire binoculars.
