When you think of a skiing holiday, the
Lake District wouldn't normally be the first place that springs
to mind. Nevertheless, there is the opportunity to ski here. Indeed,
Kendal even has its own ski club, and a specialist ski shop, and
skiing on real snow can be enjoyed in the Helvellyn region of the
Lakes. Please read on for further information.
Kendal Ski Club
Kendal Ski Club was formed by a group of enthusiastic skiers and has always been a friendly club with an annual membership of around 1500 people. All activities are provided on a voluntary basis, from gardening to ski and snowboard instruction and coaching. The slope nestles below Kendal Castle and is about 80 metres long and 35 metres wide. The surface is the user-friendly 'snowflex' material and there are two distinct smooth areas of slope, a quarter pipe, two kickers, 'waves', three rows of moguls, a grind bar and 'C' rail. Equipment is available for hire.
Lake District Ski Club
The Lake District Ski Club was founded in 1936 by keen skiers looking for somewhere to ski on real snow in the Lake District. The best area that they found was on Raise in the Helvellyn region so it is there that the Club now runs a button tow most weekends throughout the winter. If conditions are favourable, midweek skiing may also be available. Please note that the runs at Raise are not suitable for beginners, however; it is really only suited to intermediate/expert skiers and snowboarders.

Anything Technical is a shop in Kendal and the North's premier shop for ski equipment, clothing and accessories with a fully-equipped workshop for ski and snowboard servicing. Pay a visit and experience the informal atmosphere of their fantastic showroom at the base of Sand Aire House.
